Alaskan Test Nest

Sunday, March 13th, 2011
While on vacation in Alaska, my family wanted me to do a Test Nest, and I was happy to do it. A Test Nest in Alaska must include Salmon, while locals eat a lot of it, I don’t eat Salmon unless I’m in Alaska. From the short time I lived there however, and caught a few of these beauties myself, I experienced the taste difference between the varieties of Salmon. I knew my brother would have plenty of the best Salmon in their freezer so I was pretty excited to try this recipe. I had Mary teach mRead More....

Be My Valentine Test Nest

Sunday, February 20th, 2011
Ask my mom and best friends and they’ll tell you my least favorite holiday is Valentine’s Day. Last year however, I caught a little bit of the love spirit with my two hearts and chocolate dinners. They were fun and I enjoyed thinking of creative ways to incorporate hearts. So I decided that with V-day on a Monday it would be a perfect opportunity for a fun celebration of good food, friends and love – it was a fabulous evening. This menu was a popular one so I increased the number and had 9Read More....

Vegetarian Test Nest

Thursday, January 27th, 2011
I’ve had several vegetarian friends request that I do a vegetarian night. With all of the heavy foods around the holidays, and the fact that I think I ate meat everyday for 2 weeks strait, I was feeling the need to lighten it up a bit. I learned a lot about the balance of food, proteins, flavors and textures from my expert vegetarian diners, and I really enjoyed the challenge. My fabulous testers included Joon Shin, Victoria Walters, Sheila O'Connor, April Thibeault and Donovan Bunker. BalaRead More....

Celebrating 1 year with my VIP’s

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011
I had 14 amazing testers last year that attended more than 3 dinners, plus an amazing roommate who supported my experiment by allowing me to take over the apartment, fridge and much more. To show my thanks, I wanted to throw a little VIP party for my no. 1 supporters. I love making hors d-oeuvres, but rarely have the opportunity, so I decided to make the VIP night all about little bites, socializing and games. Trying to get 11 recipes ready and on serving platters on the buffet is a feat, so helRead More....

Christmas Day Brunch and Dinner

Thursday, January 13th, 2011
I went to Michigan for Christmas with my brother Bill’s family. I offered to cook Christmas Dinner so that Tammy wouldn’t have to and went over options with her so I’d make a great dinner that the kids would also enjoy. They invited the missionaries and a widow from their congregation to join us. I didn’t realize until I started making dinner that almost every dish had a little bit of sugar in it, oops, I rarely cook that way. It was all very yummy though so I guess the sugar overload waRead More....

Christmas Gift Bags

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011
I like to make treats every year for Christmas giveaways so I decided to really go all out this year and make quite a few different recipes, including the first time to make jam. [simpleviewer gallery_id="28" bgcolor="ffffff" gallery_width ="600" gallery_height ="600"]

December 13 Christmas Celebration

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011
The last TEST NEST dinner of 2010 didn’t fail to have interesting conversation, especially since Tim led everyone in a discussion about foreskin restoration and baby circumcision. Quite fitting for the holidays.I had 8 wonderful testers at this meal and we laughed the whole night away. My testers included Barbara and Nick, Sally and Tim, David Caine, Justin Benson, Kirsten Dekker and Pete Cerneka. I’ve had a lot of “firsts” this year and have quite enjoyed this fun experiment. I plan to Read More....

Thanksgiving for 14

Saturday, December 18th, 2010
I decided to stay in NYC for Thanksgiving this year and host a big TEST NEST feast – I ended up having 14 testers. A friend who was leaving town let me use his apartment so I could comfortably fit two tables, serving tables and have access to an additional oven and fridge (not to mention that it was right across the street so easy to run back and forth between the two apartments). I wouldn’t have been able to do it without his place, so thanks David! I eased a little of the stress by haviRead More....

Fall Delights – Apple a Day

Saturday, November 20th, 2010
So you might remember the previous post about getting an "Apple a Day" from the Food Network Magazine. I had a bushel of apples from apple picking (hard work climbing those trees to get the good ones). I tried making Apple Chips, but they didn't turn out incredibly well for me. I couldn't slice them thin enough, so maybe by next year I'll have a better tool for that. I made a salad with apples, spinach, leRead More....

October 9 – Pumpkin, Squash, Apples

Thursday, October 21st, 2010
I LOVE FALL and as testers arrived and the pumpkins and pork were baking they all commented that the apartment smelled like fall, so I must be doing something right! My testers were Amneris Pascasu, Marcus Bowers, Daniel and Megan Parker who did some great publicity for me and brought friends John, Dani and April. It was great to meet new friends and welcome them into my home. Since it was a Saturday night we all sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the food and company. We talked and talked and covereRead More....
